 Read “How it Feels to be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurston on page 158-162
Then create a chart where you find an example of each device below and copy the example as it is written in the text and cite, then explain what the device conveys about Hurston's feelings about race. What does she want from her audience?

Answer the following question:
How does Hurston’s use of (choose one of the devices above) convey her attitude towards race and her audience? Write a paragraph that uses at least two examples of the device mentioned in your answer to the question and fully explain the effect that it has on the audience.

Students will write a draft of their own “How it Feels to be _______ Me”
Write YOUR own "How it Feels to be__________ Me Essay".
1st paragraph: Describe yourself and negate a stereotype about where you’re from
2nd paragraph: Write about a time you realized you were different (racial, social, gender)
3rd paragraph: Describe your favorite place when you were a child (use flashback and narrative)
4th paragraph:  Reflect on something that changed your life, views, relationships, or you as a person.
5th paragraph: Fill your own paper bag (use metaphors) At least 3 things that represent you.
